Berkeley Heights Springfield Ave HDD and Main Extension

our
project

This project for NJ American Water (NJAW) included the installation of 750LF of 12” DIP installed via trenching, 1150LF of 10” HDPE installed via Directional Drill, tie-ins and service replacements. This installation replaced an aging 8” CI and Steel main hanging over the Passaic River and under the NJ Transit Rail Road Lines on Springfield Avenue at the Township boarder of Berkeley Heights and Long Hill. The directional drill was challenging as we were coordinating with two different municipalities, two different police departments, two different counties (Union and Morris), NJ Transit and a restaurant that remained open during construction.

The NJ Transit Lines were pre and post surveyed to assure no movement of the tracks. The directional drill portion was completed in less than a month, drilled to a depth of 45’ and pulled as a single section. This main was then hydrostatically tested to a pressure of 265psi.

The abandoned 8” hanging steel had to be removed off the bridge by utilizing an Under Bridge Inspection Unit and cutting and supporting the steel into manageable sections for lowering and removal. The abandoned 8” under NJ Transit was grout filled using a concrete street pump with 1,2 Grout.

CRJ is committed to identifying the solution for our clients that best achieves their goals.
